Cairo (AP) —Army loyal to a powerful Libyan commander said two military planes crashed in a village in eastern Libya on Sunday, killing at least two police officers.

The self-proclaimed Libyan Arab Army, led by General Khalifa Hifter, said the helicopter had collided over the village of Musus, 130 km southeast of Benghazi.

Crew of two officers, including Brig. In a short statement, LAAF said General Buzid al-Barasi died in a crash and a second helicopter crew survived. The statement did not give the cause of the crash and said the helicopter was on a military mission.

Mohammad UNES Menfi, head of the Libyan Presidential Council, mourned the two police officers.

Hifter troops control much of eastern and southern Libya. The crash occurred as they were fighting Chad fighters in the southern region of Libya on the border with Chad.

Clashes broke out last week after Chad’s President Idriss Dévi Itono was killed in a fight between the government and Chad’s rebels in April, potentially further destabilizing the wider Sahel region. ..
