Harmful chemicals found in fast food packaging in Europe

 

A study by European environmental and health associations detected the use of perfluoroalkylated chemicals (PFAS) in food packaging used by fast-food restaurant chains in Europe.

The use of these chemical substances, which are harmful to health, is a very widespread practice, according to the results of the investigation published this Thursday, which registered that more than 70% of the samples analyzed showed an intentional treatment with PFAS.

"PFAS are widely used in food packaging and disposable tableware in Europe," said the study involving the Alliance for Health and the Environment and seven other European non-profit organizations dedicated to environmental and health issues.

The research analyzed packaging and packaging from restaurants such as McDonald's, KFC, Subway and Dunkin Donuts, as well as take-out establishments and supermarkets in six European countries (Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom).

The results revealed that 38 of the 99 samples (38%) collected in the establishments are suspected of having been treated with PFAS chemicals to achieve oil repellency.

In addition, 32 of the 42 samples selected for chemical analysis (76%) showed an intentional treatment with PFAS, although traces of these substances were also detected in all samples selected for laboratory analysis, even in those that were not intentionally treated. 

In the conclusions of the study, they stressed that 99% of the organic fluorine present in the selected samples is not captured by the analysis of specific compounds in the laboratory, which means that it is impossible to identify with certainty the PFAS compounds present.

The lead author of the study and scientific advisor to the Czech NGO Arnika, Jitka Strakova, said that "it is time for the European Union to act and immediately and permanently ban all types of PFAS in food packaging to protect consumers. ”.

PFAS are also called "forever chemicals" because they are extremely persistent in nature, hardly breaking down, and polluting drinking water, soil, or air.

In addition, scientific studies have associated exposure to a number of PFASs with serious adverse health effects, such as cancer and impacts on the immune, reproductive and hormonal systems, as well as a decreased response to vaccines.

"We cannot accept those food containers that is discarded in a matter of minutes are treated with chemicals that persist and accumulate in the environment," stressed the head of health and chemicals from the Alliance for Health and the Environment, Natacha Cingotti.

The lead author of the UCL study has said that cough and fever are still crucial symptoms, which are experienced by many people. Experts have recruited people by sending texts via four GP surgeries in London and enrolled those people who have reported experiencing loss of smell and taste in the past four weeks.

All the participants of the study have tested positive for antibodies. The study has suggested that some of the participants have a past COVID19 infection as well. However, some of the experts say that there might be a certain constraint to this study as it has included only those people who have mild symptoms. They have said such participants cannot be the representatives of all COVID19 patients. However, the findings of the UCL study have importance for people who are feeling a change in their sense of smell or self-isolating people, who are not able to smell like everyday things like perfume, bleach, toothpaste, or coffee. The study says that not all the COVID19 patients will lose their sense of taste or smell but if they do, it is more likely to be due to COVID19 infection. Purell is one of the most popular brand names in the US. However as it claims to use alcohol for the mitigation and prevention of the disease, it means it is distributing drugs illegally. The company claims that it is proven to kill 99.9 percent of the germs on the hands, all over its products' bottles branding, website and product description. 

The agency has said that it is a bold and reassuring claim, at the time when the outbreaks of the disease are on its peak like the global spread of coronavirus. Although the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has also advised people to use hand sanitizer if there is no soap and water available around, however being better than using nothing to get rid of the disease-causing germs is not the same as being proven to kill them. The company in question has very cleverly suggested that Purell hand sanitizers can kill viruses without stating it as a fact in its FAQs section. Purell's website has said that the FDA does not allow hand sanitizer brands to make claims regarding the viruses. Around 170 people in Wuhan are still being treated in the hospital. As per the reports, nine of them are in critical condition. What is more concerning is that hundreds of tourists are all set to travel during the upcoming Lunar New Year Holiday. Chinese officials have ensured to step up monitoring efforts during this holiday period. Health authorities have assured that the situation is still preventable and it can be controlled. Doctors have claimed that the virus is not being transmitted from one person to another rather it has crossed the species barrier. According to the officials, the virus has come from a seafood and wildlife market in Wuhan.

The study conducted by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism found that alcohol-related deaths have more than doubled in the past 20 years. According to the report, the number of deaths has reached nearly 73,000 in 2017 from 36,000 in 1999. The total number of deaths in the past 18 years is almost 1 million. The increase is highest among women and middle-aged people and older. The study also found that drinking increased 10.1 per cent and binge drinking increased by 23.3 per cent among women, but it remains unchanged for men. 

George Koob, director of the institute, said that the report is a wakeup call to the threat that alcohol poses. Koob said that alcohol-related deaths are increasing among a large number of population. A higher rate of deaths among older and middle-aged drinkers is a cause of concern as the number of people above 65 years will increase to 95 million in 2060. In 2017, the number of people in the age group is 51 million. Around 2.6 per cent of the total death in 2017 was because of alcohol. 

Women in the age group of 65-to-74 year olds saw the highest rate of alcohol-related deaths in 1999. This was followed by the women in the age group of 55 to 64. But this changed by 2017 as the deaths in the women of the age group 55 to 64 increased in comparison to the age of 45 to 54. The annual rise in death for women jumped to 5.2 per cent a year in 2010-17 from 2.1 per cent a year in 1999-2010. The study said that excessive alcohol drinking can put women at greater risk for certain cancers and cardiovascular diseases. Researchers said further study is needed for understanding the public health burden.

Cancer Death Rate Across the US Declines with Significant One-Year Drop, Study Finds

The latest report from the ACS (American Cancer Society) reveals a sharp fall in deaths due to lung cancer; the rate has decreased by a third from 1991. Reportedly, from 1992 to 2017, total cancer deaths have declined by around 29%, assessed at up to 3 million prevented deaths. Apart from this, a fall in mortality for four significant cancers – colon, prostate, lung, and breast, plays a crucial role. CDC Warns Parents Citing Excessive Use of Toothpaste by Kids

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says young children are using too much toothpaste while brushing their teeth. A new study revealed many parents are squeezing more amount of toothpaste on their children’s brush. Health officials warn the unhealthy amount of toothpaste can be dangerous for children. The research by the CDC said nearly 40% of the kids between 3-6 age group used more toothpaste than the recommended amount. Also, an excessive amount of toothpaste on brush results in swallowing of fluoride. It may be dangerous for children and may result in discoloration of their teeth.

The CDC arranged a survey to reveal the fact. Around 5,157 parents and guardians participated in the investigation. The opinion poll asked questions related to kids and their teeth-brushing activities. The bank included questions like – when their child started brushing teeth, how often do they brush and the amount of toothpaste they use. After the investigation, the organization found that around 40% of children between 3-6 ages used a large quantity of toothpaste. While scientist fears that swallowing too much of fluoride can damage harm the enamel of the teeth. The CDC said, ingestion of too much fluoride while developing phase of teeth can lead to damage of enamel structure of teeth. Moreover, it may lead to discoloration.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), and the American Dental Association (ADA) suggests a particular quantity for different age groups. According to the agencies, children between ages 2-3 should brush two times a day, using a rice grain-sized amount of toothpaste each time. Besides, children between ages 3-6, should brush twice with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. The CDC wants parents to keep an eye on the amount of toothpaste their child is using. It suggests parents should supervise as the child starts brushing. The agency says parents should begin brushing a child’s teeth as soon as the first tooth bursts out. But they should use a clean, damp cloth to do so. The organization says toothpaste with fluoride can be given to kids when they are two years old.

Electronic Cigarettes don’t help smokers quit, a new study finds

Experts rail against electronics vaping devices; you may have seen ads and stories on the TV or the internet, they often say e-cigarettes are not harmful or an effective way to quit smoking. But new research suggests that E-cigarettes and other vaping devices haven’t helped many U.S smokers quit.

On Monday, researchers of George State of University found that U.S smokers who didn’t use vaping devices were more than twice as likely to quit as those who did. Scott Weaver, assistant professor of epidemiology and biostatistics, said that “These products have not fulfilled the public health promotion of helping people in the U.S quit smoking.” However, some paper found that e-cigarettes help smokers to quit traditional cigarettes, while others have seen that they don’t. Researchers cited several reasons for finding their finding, including that smokers might not get nicotine from vaping to switch from traditional cigarettes completely.

According to Dr. Erikson “There is so much misinformation that confused people, whether vaping is more or less harmful than traditional cigarettes, and the confusion occurs due to lack of consensus in the scientific research community what the side effects and benefits of e-cigarettes.” And we need to give the guidance to smokers and tell them how to use these products and that they need to quit smoking and ignore dual use.

Robert West, the co-author of the study and professor of health psychology at the University of London, said that “We estimate for every 10,000 people who haven’t used an e-cigarette to quit, approximately 580 people would have quit who wouldn’t have quit otherwise”. But he adds that there is no clear evidence that these devices were promoting more people to quit smoking”.
