Chicago (AP) — The Illinois Attorney General’s Office has announced a new initiative to combat organized retail crime. The issue is estimated by a domestic trade association to cost $ 45 billion annually.
Attorney General Kwame Raoul said his office has set up a task force with law enforcement agencies, federal agencies including the Department of Homeland Security, major retailers and associations. His office analyzes data and tips from retailers and law enforcement agencies to investigate organized retail crime.
The goal is to improve communication between public and private groups, find problems, and come up with approaches that ultimately lead to more arrests.
“Organized retail crime is a multi-billion dollar industry annually, but more important than economic costs is the danger that organized retail crime poses to our community,” Raul said in a recent statement. Stated. “These brave and violent crimes are committed by sophisticated criminal organizations involved in drug trafficking, trafficking and other serious crimes.”
The Coalition of Law Enforcement and Retail, an industry group, estimates that retail thefts cost $ 45 billion annually. Retailers also report that theft has increased in recent years. For example, the Home Depot survey of organized retail crime networks has skyrocketed 86% since 2016, according to Raoul’s office.
