Tallahassee, Florida (AP) Notre Dame survived the unlikely comeback of Florida State University’s backup quarterback McKenzie Milton on an emotional night when Seminole honored Bobby Bowden.
Jonathan’s overtime scored a 41-yard field goal, and No. 9 Notre Dame fled with a 41-38 victory after Florida overcame an 18-point deficit on Sunday.
Florida state kicker Ryan Fitzgerald’s 37-yard attempt made a big voyage to the left in his first overtime, allowing Notre Dame to perform several plays and set up a doller’s kick.
“The most important thing is to win the opening round against a team that has presented many challenges,” said Brian Kelly, coach of Notre Dame. “I know I have work to do, but I like this team. We’ll get better and we’ll make a lot of improvements in the second week.”
Boden, a coaching tycoon who won two national titles at Seminole, died of pancreatic cancer on August 8 at the age of 91.
Bowden’s trademark hat and the script “Bobby” logo were on the 25-yard line, and Florida State University coaches also wore the logo on their polo shirts. The Florida State University Marching Chief spelled “Bobby” in the field half-time and played “Amazing Grace.”
Milton, a transfer quarterback for UCF graduates who haven’t been in the game since suffering a severe leg injury in November 2018, fired a 22-yard strike on Jaki Douglas on his first pass.
Treshawn Ward completed the drive by scoring a two-yard run, and Fitzgerald tied it with a 43-yard field goal with 40 seconds remaining. Milton had a 5 of 7 at 48 yards and 3 rushes at 6 yards.
