Washington — Last weekend, more than 400,000 Americans took Pfizer booster shots through a local pharmacy on the first day of US efforts to better protect vulnerable people.
Jeff Seiens, COVID-19 coordinator at the White House, said another million people are planning booster shots in the coming weeks. “We’re off to a very strong start with the booster campaign,” he adds.
As many as 25 million people will participate in the third dose of Pfizer Shot, which was approved last week. This is permitted for people over the age of 65, in existing conditions, or at high risk at work.
US officials say their main focus is to ensure that about 25% of eligible Americans who have not yet taken their first shot do so.
Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, states that the primary priority is vaccination coverage for pregnant women, 30% nationwide and 15% for black pregnant women. She advised them to look for vaccinations, saying that the data show that they are safe for mothers and babies and can prevent unnecessary illness and death.
