What do you think of the festival so far?

I am very happy to be back in the lineup and Venice and make people look very happy. However, there are still limits to be addressed. Covid’s 50% cinema capacity is a big issue if you have twice as many representatives as in 2020. Last year, there were about 6,000 certified guests. There are 10,500 people this year. This caused problems with ticket access and booking systems. Last year there were no of these issues.

Can you show more?

That was impossible. We use all the theaters in Lido, Venice and Maestre. No additional screens are available. This is the problem …

But I didn’t expect so many people to attend the festival. But this is not an explanation for the failure of the booking system, but an unexpected one.

At the beginning of the festival, I can’t remember this positive reaction from critics to many films. It’s mainly here, but I also noticed it from Telluride. What do you put it in? Is it just a happy coincidence and a great quality movie? Or are there other factors, such as big film delays, critics coming back to major film festivals and getting excited and wanting to support independent films? Do you think the thirst for clicks on social media and the desire to kickstart the award topic are a factor in many rave?

No, I think this year is an exceptional year in terms of quality. I can’t remember having been in the same situation for the last 10 years. I saw so many good movies during the selection process that I didn’t know how to handle them. We had to turn down some movies that we would be happy to invite in a normal year. This year is an exceptional year. but why? I’m confused. Of course, some movies are suppressed, but they still can’t explain the high level of quality. Here is the director who has made the best movies over the years.

Generally speaking, I think everyone is betting on quality. We know that the platform plays a bigger role in the production environment. As we get out of the pandemic, we will face a whole new and different landscape. The relationship between the platform and the industry is the opposite. I wasn’t in Cannes so I can’t talk about it. I couldn’t go because I had closed my selection. But in that sense, I heard rumors that I was a little more relaxed.

Have you ever had a positive Covid test at the festival?

I don’t know one.There is an update today [Monday].. I think there were two positive tests, but after the second test they were false positives. The situation is very controlled. According to our survey, 90% of certified guests are double vaccinated, which is higher than the general public.

A few years ago there was fierce competition between Venice, Toronto and Telluride. Ten years ago, Toronto was the most important date on the autumn festival calendar. I feel that the festival is well-balanced now. Perhaps Venice is in an even better position as we come first and the amount of media from around the world means we can provide a truly global platform. This is a great opportunity for the studio to reach internationally. North American market. I am confident that Venice will maintain this position.

Last year you were rewarded with an additional four-year term. What do you want to achieve with the next three editions?

It was a long project. I started working when I returned to Venice 10 years ago. I wanted to change my profile and renew the festival. In a sense, we have succeeded in doing that. Over the next three years, we need to integrate and make some improvements. With growing demand here, we would like to open two new theaters, one on the third floor of the casino and one like the red cube in the yard. These will be implemented next year.
