It wasn’t soccer either. It was a cat.
The animal somehow entered Hard Rock Stadium and was caught on one of its paws from the façade of the upper deck in the first quarter. It eventually fell to a lower level in the stadium, where fans using the American flag as some sort of makeshift net could safely catch it before it was safely carried. I did.
“They were trying to grab it from above, but couldn’t reach it, but down,” said Craig Cromer, a facility manager at the University of Miami and season ticket holder who brought the flag with his wife Kimberley. It was then that Cromer took the flag off the tie he was using to hold it on the railing and wanted the best. The petrified cat fell, bounced off the flag a bit, and was eventually secured by some of the nearby student sections before being taken away by stadium guards.
Miami coach Manny Diaz said he learned about the post-match cat incident. The hurricane on Saturday broke through Appalachian State University 25-23.
“I don’t know anything about it or what was happening,” Diaz said. “But if the cat helps us with our Red Zone attack, we’ll see if we can give it a scholarship.”
The cat showed no signs of injury. Cromer was otherwise okay, except that it was sprayed by spilled drinks and hanging cats.
“The worst thing that has ever happened in a game,” said Kimberly Cromer.
