Georgia won the top spot during the regular season for the first time since November 1982, and was the new No. 1 in the Associated Press College football vote on Sunday with a unanimous vote.
The Bulldog (62 votes) climbed No. 1 in the AP Top 25 announced by Regions Bank the day after the season’s No. 1 Alabama was defeated at Texas A & M. Defending national champion Crimson Tide dropped four spots to fifth place after his first defeat of the season.
After being out of the rankings for the first time this season last week, Aggie’s has returned to 21st place.
Alabama was one of the two top five teams to lose on Saturday, opening the door for some teams to climb to rare heights.
Iowa moved up one place to second after winning a top five match against Pennsylvania State University. Hawkeye has the highest ranking since it took first place in 1985.
No.3 Cincinnati has the highest ranking ever.
No. 4 Oklahoma moved up two places after a come-from-behind victory over Texas in the Red River rival.
No. 5 Alabama is No. We voted 14 times in a row. It is in the top 3 for the first time since 2019.
Big Ten dominates the second half of the Top 10, with Ohio 6th, Penn 7th, Michigan 8th, and Michigan 10th. Big Ten has five top 10 teams for the first time in the history of AP voting dating back to 1936.
Oregon slipped in 9th place. Kentucky has risen 5th to 11th in the Wildcats highest ranking since 2011.
Voting points
—Georgia’s last place was in the 2008 pre-season vote, but the bulldog slipped a week after the match and won, but never returned.
This is the 16th time the bulldog has won the top rank and the first time it has unanimously ranked first.
out
Auburn dropped out of the rankings after suffering his second defeat this season. The Tigers were the latest team to be suffocated by Georgia’s dominant defense.
Auburn was able to record an aggressive touchdown against the bulldog. This is Georgia’s second touchdown this season.
Conference call
According to ESPN, the only other league that has won half of the top 10 in the ranking is the Southeastern Conference alone, which has been held 23 times.
With the exception of last season, when some FBS teams were ineligible for voting early in the season because they didn’t plan to schedule the fall, the SEC last had five top 10 teams. It was the last regular season vote for 2019.
SEC — 7 (No. 1, 5, 11, 13, 17, 20, 21).
Big Ten-5 (No. 2, 6, 7, 8, 10).
Big 12-3 (No. 4, 12, 25).
ACC — 2 (No. 16, 22).
Americans — 2 (No. 3, 23).
Pac-12 — 2 (No. 9, 18).
Mountain West — 1 (No.24).
