Detroit (AP) — Aretha Franklin was given a little afterlife respect on Monday when the post office in her hometown of Detroit was named after the deceased singer.
Postal and elected officials, as well as members of Franklin’s family, visited the former Fox Creek Post Office to celebrate the name change in honor of the Queen of Souls.
“Her heritage lives on in her music, her family, but we’ve added a post office with her name on her heritage list,” said the Democratic Party of Michigan. US Congressman Brenda Lawrence, a member and longtime post office worker, said.
Lawrence is also Franklin’s friend and was renamed after submitting a bill in Congress.
The law, signed by President Donald Trump in January, passed Congress, said US Senator Gary Peters.
“I sometimes wonder if Congress can get together,” a Democratic senator said at a dedication on Monday. “When you get up and recognize this wonderful person, Congress can get together.”
The post office is about five miles east of downtown and not far from the Detroit River Concert Amphitheater, named after Franklin. It is now known as the “Aretha Franklin Post Office Building”.
Franklin died in 2018 at his home in Detroit at the age of 76. Many of the songs she recorded during her legendary career, such as “Think,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” and “Respect,” are considered classics.
