Hello from Memorial Stadium. The storyline is plentiful ahead of today’s match between Illinois and Wisconsin. Let’s run them …
-Bret Burma spent nine seasons in Wisconsin and was in charge of the program for seven years. He won three Big Ten Championships in badgers. Currently, Illinois coach Bielema isn’t very interested in framing the game as the new team is playing the old team.
-A homecoming game with Wisconsin actually brings nostalgic memories to Illinois fans. Two years ago (but not today), Irini kicker James McCourt drilled a 29-yard field goal to ensure an upset victory. The field was attacked. McCourt was caught in the bottom of his teammate’s mountain and was almost pitch black due to lack of oxygen.
-Let’s just say that neither Illinois nor Wisconsin have made very effective attacks on the field this season. Irini ran at least the ball well in the last two games against Josh McRae and Chase Brown. Badgers aren’t doing that very well.
Neither team has a quarterback worth mentioning. Brandon Peters was inefficient after recovering from Irini’s injury. Graham Meltz of Wisconsin played the best match of his career against Illinois last year and hasn’t done anything comparable to his efforts ever since.
Irini and the badger will face each other at the Memorial Stadium, so there’s a lot to follow. Wisconsin probably needs more victory than Illinois in its grand plans, but Illinois is looking for more than defeating Charlotte last week. That’s not the purpose of Bielema being here.
