West Caldwell, NJ (AP) — Jin Youngko finished a wire-to-wire victory at the Cognizant Founders Cup on Sunday in 14 consecutive rounds of the 1960s, consistent with Annika Sorenstam’s 16-year record.
Even in the stable rain at Mountain Ridge, a 26-year-old Korean star made it easy. She won four shots against Germany’s Caroline Masson, finishing with a 5-under 66.
Ko started the final round with a four-shot lead and no one was closer than three all day long. The tournament was almost fixed, but it was a matter of how she ended up. Kor ran off 4 birdies with a 5 hole stretch in the middle of the back nine and finished with an 18 under 266.
It was her 14th consecutive round in the 1960s, dating back to 69 in the final round of the Evian Championship. It connects Mark Sorenstam, set in the middle of her 10-win season in 2005.
Sorenstam won three of the four tournaments in 14 straight rounds of the 1960s, including majors, and finished second in another tournament. Ko won the championship twice, was in 2nd place, and was tied for 6th place among other players during the winning streak.
Ko joined Nelly Korda as the three-time winner of this season’s LPGA Tour. She became the fifth Korean with at least 10 wins, well below the 25 times recorded by pioneer Pak Se-ri.
After playing Ko for the past four weeks, we’ll be back home and have a short break. She plans to play the BMW Ladies Championship in South Korea the following week — the only Asian event in the fall for a pandemic.
“I still have a chance to beat Anika, and I’ll do my best,” she said after taking a champagne shower.
Ko succeeded in defending the title in the Founders Cup, but it was as different as possible. The tournament was held in Phoenix in 2019, and after being canceled during last year’s pandemic, it won a new title sponsor and moved to Donald Ross Design in New Jersey.
These consecutive victories took place on the other side of the country every two years, six months and 16 days. Cognizant has also doubled its prize pool, making it the largest wallet of any regular LPGA tour event. Ko has won $ 450,000.
More importantly, as the end of the season approached, she pulled within 20 points of Corda in the race to the CME Gloves.
Corda, who won the first major championship in the Women’s PGA Championship, replaced the longest run in the world this summer. A 23-year-old American also won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
Corda finished 73 at Mountain Ridge and drew in 19th place. She has won three times in the last six events and they are her only top ten.
Corda hasn’t played in South Korea, so it’s a great chance to overtake Ko on the season points list. The LPGA will then conclude with two Florida events that conclude with the CME Group Tour Championship.
Kou won the season finale a year ago after overcoming a pandemic in South Korea for most of the season. It gives her four victories in last calendar year.
She was particularly motivated by last week’s ShopRite LPGA Classic. Ko controlled the tournament, missed a series of 10-foot putts on the back nine and finished a shot behind Celine Butier.
“I was really sad last week. Sunday wasn’t good,” she said. “I did my best this week, but I did.”
Masson matched two birdies with Ko in the front nine and made five birdies in the back nine with 64, but it was too late by then.
Elizabeth Zokol finished 69 and finished alone in 3rd place, 7 shots behind. Jeongeun Lee 6 (67) and US Women’s Open Champion Yu Saso (70) are tied for 4th place.
