Washington (AP) — A memorial service for former Army General and former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, who died on Monday, will be held at Washington National Cathedral on November 5, a spokeswoman said Thursday.
“The number of seats is very limited and it’s an invitation only,” Peggy Sifrino said in an email.
Powell died of COVID-19 complications at the age of 84. He was vaccinated, but his family said his immune system was compromised by the multiple myeloma, the blood cancer he was being treated for.
The retired Army General was the first black man to serve as Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and was widely praised as a pavement. The story of him in uniform for 35 years and becoming famous as a soldier and diplomat was a historic example for minorities.
He joined President George W. Bush’s administration as Secretary of State in 2001. Powell’s tenure was impaired in a February 2003 UN speech citing false information claiming that Iraq’s Saddam Hussein had secretly concealed weapons of mass destruction. Such weapons were never realized and Iraqi leaders were dismissed, but the war developed into years of military and humanitarian losses.
Not a privileged child, Powell often assembled his biography as an American success story.
“My stuff is the story of an early unpromised black child from a limited-means immigrant family who grew up in South Bronx,” he wrote in his 1995 autobiography, “My American Journey.” ..
It’s an experience he liked to remember later in life. When he appeared at the United Nations, even during his Iraqi speech, he often remembered his childhood in New York City, where he grew up as a child of Jamaican immigrants and he at the Pepsi Cola bottling factory. The East River from United Nations Headquarters received one of his first jobs directly.
Powell’s path to the army began at City College, where he discovered ROTC. When he wore his first uniform, he wrote, “I liked what I saw.”
He joined the Army and was one of the more than 16,000 military advisers sent to South Vietnam by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. The series of promotions led to his duties as a military aide to the Department of Defense and Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger. He later became commander of the German Army’s Fifth Corps and served as National Security Adviser to President Ronald Reagan.
During his term as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which began in 1989, his approach to war became known as Powell’s doctrine. And a strategy to end the war.
