Kathy Hokuru, Deputy Governor under Cuomo, will take up the top position in August and will run a maturity campaign. James, who was widely expected to run, will compete with Hokuru and others for the Democratic nomination prior to the November 2022 general election. Brasio.
In her announcement, James also played her efforts to prosecute the former president. Donald Trump, Sued his administration 76 times (“But who is counting ?!” she cracked).
James, 63, was a member of the New York City Council and the New York State Legislature before becoming New York City Public Advocate. She was elected Attorney General in 2018 and took over Erik Schneiderman (after a tentative change). Erik Schneider resigned on allegations of physical abuse of a woman.
She has long been praised by the Liberal Democratic Party for targeting pharmaceutical companies and the National Rifle Association as Attorney General. Another target was Cuomo about his treatment of Covid-19 before he was destined for his report on his actions with women. Specifically, the state has accused the Cuomo administration of systematically underestimating the deaths of Covid, a nursing home in the state.
