Police: Portage’s father arrested after his two-year-old son found a gun and shot himself

Portage, Indiana — Northwest Indiana’s father was arrested Thursday after a two-year-old boy found a gun and shot himself.

Police officers responded to 6200 blocks on Old Porter Road with a child shot report. When they arrived, the boy had a gunshot wound on his right leg, and his father, John Morani, 30, said he had dressed his wounds to delay bleeding.

Paramedics took over the boy and transferred him to Methodist Northlake and then to the University of Chicago. The extent of his injury is unknown, but authorities expect a two-year-old child to survive.

Authorities determined that the boy had turned off safety and found a gun in his father’s bedroom. He then shot himself, police said.

Mourani was charged with the negligence of his dependents and was seriously injured for a level 3 felony.
