Has been updated:Phoenix (AP) — The Colorado Rockies made Bill Schmidt their permanent general manager on Saturday and promoted him from the interim GM spot he had held since May.
The Rocky Mountains were 74-85 years old when announced before playing in Arizona.
“Five months later, it became increasingly clear that Bill was the right person to move the franchise forward,” said team president and chief operating officer Greg Fiesel. “He was in a difficult situation and quickly influenced his play on and off the field.”
The Rocky Mountains began this year in turmoil by trading franchise star Nolan Arenado to St. Louis in the off-season, and have been 9-17 years old since April.
Colorado hasn’t lost since May and has been .500 since the All-Star Break. It’s still the fourth farthest in the NL West, but it’s only 31/2 games behind the San Diego Padres, which was once competing in this category.
“The last five months have been important and we want our fans to know that our baseball team is bringing a fresh perspective, approach and energy,” Schmidt said.
The Rocky Mountains also said they have promoted Danny Montgomery to Scout Vice President / Assistant General Manager and Zack Rosenthal to Baseball Vice President / Assistant GM and Assistant General Counsel.
Schmidt has been part of the Rocky Mountains organization since being hired by the Cleveland Indians as Head of Scouting in 1999. He replaced Jeff Bridich, who resigned as general manager of the team in late April.
