Boston (AP) designated hitter JD Martinez was removed from the Red Sox roster on Tuesday in a wild card playoff against the New York Yankees.

Martinez, who played in the outfield after Boston finished his regular season in Washington, an NL park where DH wasn’t used, skated on second base while taking a position during the innings. He remained in the game during the half-innings before being replaced by a pinch hitter.

Manager Alex Cora said Monday that Martinez was being treated and the Red Sox would see how his ankles react. This season, the four-time All-Star hit .286 with 28 home runs and 99 RBIs.

The Yankees added outfielder Greg Allen to their list and Rob Brantly as the third catcher. Left-handed Andrew Heaney and right-handed Brody Corner have been designated for open roster spot assignments.

With Ace Gerrit Cole on the mound, Kyle Higashioka is behind the plate. Coach Aaron Boone said starting pitcher Gary Sanchez will not be a designated hitter and Sanchez will start on the bench with Brantley, who was 3-20 in six games against the Yankees this season.

Allen is speedy and can be used as a pinch runner.
