Washington (Nexstar) -At the United Nations Climate Summit in Glasgow on Monday, President Joe Biden promised that the United States would set an example in reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
He said the world leaders had no time to waste.
“Will we seize a great opportunity before us, or will we blame future generations for suffering?” Biden said.
Climate change is exacerbating droughts, wildfires and storms, and scientists warn that without swift action, damage to the planet and humanity could be irreversible.
In Glasgow, Biden has vowed to cut US emissions by half (below 2005 levels) by 2030. He said the country is aiming to become a “net zero emission economy” by 2050.
“We are at a turning point in world history,” Biden said. “We have the ability to invest in ourselves and build the future of clean energy.”
To reach its high climate goals, Biden needs to pass the Buildback Better program. It plans to spend $ 550 billion to combat climate change.
The plan is at a dead end in Congress. So far, Biden has struggled to lock in the necessary support from medium-sized Democratic senators Kyrsten Cinema and Joe Manchin.
As of Monday, Manchin said he hadn’t boarded yet.
“I can’t support trillions of dollars in trading unless Congress makes it clearer why it chose to ignore the serious effects of inflation,” he said.
While promoting stronger action here, the President also plans to launch new initiatives to help developing countries fight climate change.
