Has been updated:Barcelona, Spain (AP) —Spanish rescuers say 10 migrants died while trying to reach the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.
Rescuers said on Monday that they found an migrant ship drifting 200 km (124 miles) from the Canary Islands and saved 40 people, but recovered two.
The boat is believed to have departed from Dakhla on the coast of Western Sahara five days ago. I found a Spanish rescue plane drifting in the Atlantic Ocean. At least five people had to evacuate to a hospital on Gran Canaria by helicopter for emergency medical treatment. The other survivors were taken back to the port of Arguineguin on the same island on one of the Spanish rescue vessels.
The death on Monday was reported the day after the deaths of eight others on another migrant vessel on the way to the Spanish archipelago. The Red Cross said one migrant died shortly after arriving at the land late Sunday.
The Spanish Maritime Rescue Team said over the past two days, more than 100 people had been rescued from migrant smugglers and taken to the Canary Islands. So far this year, more than 17,000 migrants and refugees have arrived in the Canary Islands by boat, an increase of 24% compared to the same period last year.
According to the United Nations Immigration Service, about 900 migrants have died or gone missing on dangerous migration routes from West Africa to the Canary Islands. Experts say that even the number is underestimated, as many migrant vessels sink without confirmation.
