Seoul, South Korea (AP) — TWICE, a nine-member K-pop band with more than 9 million Twitter followers, says it feels more popular abroad.
“People didn’t know us as much as they do now,” band member Jihyo told The Associated Press prior to the release of the band’s third full-length album, “Formula Of Love: O + T = 3” last week. With the growing popularity of K-POP around the world, the band was able to release more English tracks.
The new album has 17 tracks, including all three English songs. On Monday, they announced a tour that began in Seoul on December 24th and in February took them to five US cities, including Los Angeles, New York, and Atlanta.
TWICE released their first full English single “The Feels” in October. This was the first song to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
TWICE is a common name in Korea and Japan, and the band regularly tops the Oricon music charts. This is equivalent to Japanese billboard. (TWICE’s Sana, Mina, and Momo members are from Japan.)
The band’s success came after years of hard work. TWICE, who made their debut in 2015, went to the interview with all their might even after 5 hours of intense dance practice prior to the release of the album.
Jeongyeon surprised his bandmates by announcing that he could easily help his friends by working as a barista, a breath of fresh air from the star who announced a hiatus from September due to mental health problems.
She said no one was aware of her and said she didn’t play TWICE songs at the cafe.
Jihyo, who co-authored several songs for the new album, said he was inspired by real-life events, including the death of a houseplant.
“I really owned a cactus,” Jihyo said, adding that he couldn’t water or care for the plants because of his busy schedule. “I completely forgot, and a few months later I realized it was dead,” she said. “I felt very sick. I gave it a name.”
She said the song “Cactus” was written from a botanical point of view, seeing its owner entering and exiting the room and ignoring it.
