No. 8 Texas will bring a streak of three games built on solid defense to a unique throwback contest against visiting Sam Houston on Monday in Austin, Texas.

The game will take place at the Gregory Gymnasium on the University of Texas campus and will be attended exclusively to Texas students as part of Chris Beard’s move to focus on the tradition and past of Texas basketball.

This is the first time Longhorns has held a men’s basketball regular season contest at a historic building for the first time in 45 years. The Gregory Gymnasium served as the home of Texas basketball from the 1930-31 season to the 1976-77 campaign.

Longhorns (4-1) heads to the slowback game after winning a 68-44 home victory at the California Baptist on Wednesday. Timmy Allen and Andrew Jones both scored 15 points in Texas, while Courtney Ramey and Christian Bishop each scored 12 points.

Longhorns limited the California Baptist to 40.5% floor shots and 2 out of 16 3-point shots. The California Baptists entered the game with an average of 80.0 points per game, hitting a total of 50.2% from the floor, including a 39.6% mark from the other side of the arc.

“It was the best defensive game of the year. No doubt,” Beard said. “Anyone who knows about basketball can see it.”

Texas has kept its opponents below 50 points in three consecutive games. The Longhorns allowed only six assists while forcing 23 turnovers, scoring a 25-11 advantage in turnover points compared to the California Baptist.

Jones said the Longhorns still have a way to continue their attacks.

“It will take a little longer,” he explained. “As soon as our defenses are a little stronger, our attacks will be even more prosperous. We need to get no scores and make the whole team a little more proud. Our crimes Will come. “

Beard is still working to capture a solid rotation among the 12 players who have already influenced this season.

“We are confident that everyone on our active list, 12 players now, and everyone is playing here,” Beard said. “We haven’t settled on the rotation yet, and I don’t think it’s a bad thing.”

Sam Houston (2-4) heads west to Austin after losing 75-66 at SMU on Wednesday. This is the third consecutive loss in four days. Bearkats dragged at 24 points, but caught within 6 in the last few minutes before time was running out.

Samuel Houston was transferred from Texas A & M and led the season’s second double-double, the Sevian Flag with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Demarx Lampley added 16 points and Tristan Ikpe scored 13 rebounds from the losing barecut.

“We were good when we launched the attack,” said Sam Houston coach Jason Hooten. “Otherwise, we need to get it to work better and create more paths. If you can go to the same page and do what you want, this team will remind you of the 2019 team. . “

Bearcut moved from the Southland Conference to the Western Athletic Conference for basketball this season, was selected for the preseason and finished seventh in the new league.
