Cape Canaveral, Florida (AP) —Astronauts leaving the International Space Station as early as this weekend get stuck in diapers on their way home because the capsule toilet is broken.
NASA astronaut Megan McArthur explained that the situation on Friday was “non-optimal” but easy to manage.
“Space flight is full of many small challenges,” she said during a press conference from orbit. “This is another thing we encounter and take care of in our mission, so we are not too worried about it.”
Later on Friday, the mission manager was able to decide whether to return MacArthur and her three crew members to SpaceX capsules before starting the exchange. The launch has already been delayed by more than a week due to bad weather and undisclosed medical issues involving one of the crew.
French astronaut Thomas Pesquet told reporters that the past six months have been fierce there.
