Turin, Italy (AP) —If Alexander Zverev’s performance this weekend is any sign, we can expect a lot from the Germans in third place in 2022.
Zverev defeated the top two in a series of games and won his second title in the ATP Finals.
After defeating Novak Djokovic, who ranked first in more than three sets in the semi-finals, Zverev performed overwhelmingly, beating second-placed Daniil Medvedev 6-4, 6-4 in the finals on Sunday.
US Open champion Medvedev won the event last year, beating Zverev five times in a row.
“There is no better way to finish the season than to win here,” Zverev said. “I am very much looking forward to next year.”
This title will be a significant year for Zverev, who also won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, 59 times more than Medvedev in 2021 and more victories than anyone else.
The main lack of Zverev’s trophy collection is the Grand Slam trophy, which lost Dominic Thiem’s spectacular final in last year’s US Open final.
The final was Tuesday’s round-robin rematch, with Medvedev defeating Zverev in his third set of tiebreakers.
This went the way of Zverev from the beginning. A 6’6 (1.98m) player crushed a huge backhand into the corner, gaining from the netcode winner and defeating Medvedev’s serve in the third game of the match.
Helped by the fast conditions in Paraalpitur, Zverev was barely touched on the serve and scored 20 out of 25 points on the first set of serve.
Zverev broke again in the opening game of the second set and began to run a confident and bold swing volley winner.
Zverev ended it with an ace out on his first match point and a second serve.
This was the first edition of the end-of-season event for Turin’s top eight players. After spending 12 years in London, Zverev won his first final title in 2018.
Pierre-Huguer Herbert and Nicolas Mahut defeated Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury 6-4, 7-6 (0) to win the doubles title.
