As of Wednesday, a total of 17,031,036 vaccines have been administered in Illinois, with 57.68% of the state’s population fully vaccinated. The 7-day moving average of the daily vaccine is 64,199.

Illinois is now in the midst of a worse COVID case surge than the previous one, which surged late in the summer, and doctors are worried about what will happen after the holidays.

Holidays are a time when doctors are very closely monitoring the number of COVID cases. This is because there is always a delay in the reported cases and how they affect more severe hospitals. Currently, the numbers aren’t looking good.

“Currently, what we are mainly looking at is the first part of the rise, or what we are afraid of is the first part of the rise in general hospitalization. And certainly, we. The main concern of this is that this will once again lead us to a full surge and overwhelm the ICU, “said Dr. Justin Fiara, a respiratory and critical care specialist at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

According to the Illinois Public Health Service, the reason for concern is that the average number of 7-day COVID cases across the state has risen to 4,618, above the peak on September 4.

The last seven-day average was so high in January, when the number surged to 4,649. Doctors attribute the surge to several factors. As the temperature drops, people gather more inside. And now that vaccines are widely available, some people are becoming more lazy about wearing masks.

“So what we are really worried about is that by totally dropping the kind of our guards as a society, we open the door to another truly catastrophic surge.” Said Fiara.

Chicago is also in the midst of a surge. The average daily COVID case is 567, an increase of 15% from last week. The last time was the best in April of this year.

Dr. Fiara said the families to be gathered need to be open and honest with each other.

“So I think the best thing people can do is be very open with their families. Ask seemingly difficult questions about how you were vaccinated and had those conversations.” Dr. Fiara said.

According to Fiara, another option for unvaccinated people is to ask them to be tested for COVID before they meet at a holiday gathering.
