Washington (AP) —California is the first person in the United States to have an identified case of an Omicron variant of COVID-19.
Dr. Anthony Fauci said the person returned from South Africa on 22 November and was a traveler who tested positive on 29 November. The person was vaccinated but did not receive a booster shot.
The news comes as scientists continue to study the risks posed by new strains of the virus. At the end of last month, the Biden administration moved to limit travel from southern Africa, where variants were first identified and spread. NS
