Urbana, Illinois (WAND)-Champaign Urbana will be undergoing the first new imaging examination of this type.
Karl has partnered with the University of Illinois to conduct a Champaign-Urbana Census. A study that uses a new and unique technology, Siemens MAGNETOM Terra 7 Tesla (7T) MRI, to collect information on the structure and function of the brains of various volunteer groups.
Research leaders gather information on how to improve understanding of brain health and how the brain changes over time, and hopefully the findings of the technology for improving clinical outcomes. Will support translation.
This study requires 300 local volunteers over the age of 18 who are willing to make a commitment of up to three years spent answering several questionnaires on health, medical history, and physical activity.
Participants will also be asked to perform a brief cognitive function assessment and will receive up to three 2-hour brain scans at the Carle Illinois Advanced Imaging Center.
“We are very pleased to be able to carry out this study with people living in or near the Champaign Urbana region. Participants have contributed to a great many life-changing studies locally, nationally and internationally. That’s true, “said Dr. Bruce Damon, Karl Health’s Clinical Laboratory, co-director of the Karl Illinois Advanced Imaging Center and director of clinical imaging research for the Stevens family.
Karl and local researchers at the university will use the data collected from volunteers to create an anonymized public database of 7T neuroimaging as a baseline for future research around the world.
Neuroimaging data provides unique and detailed information about the structure and function of the brains of healthy volunteers.
“It makes the most sense to work together with researchers and clinicians who already exist between the university and Karl. No one in Illinois has this kind of access to the 7T. So this is a huge deal. It’s a very secure tool that provides very detailed images, “said Dr. Tracey Wszalek, co-director of the Carle Illinois Advanced Imaging Center. Wszalek is also the director of the Biomedical Imaging Center at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Illinois.
