The Beverly Hills Police Department has identified the suspect as 29-year-old Mayor Ariel.
Police were called to Avants’ house after reporting the shooting on Wednesday at 2:23 am. A policeman found a gunshot wound 81 years old. She was taken to the hospital but did not survive.
Lovingly known as “Jackie,” Avant has long been well-known and respected for her philanthropy.
Her husband, Clarence Avant, was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was also the subject of the 2019 Netflix documentary The Black Godfather, which highlighted his influence in the music industry.
At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, Beverly Hills police chief Mark G. Stainbrook said the investigation was too early to discuss the possible motives behind the shooting. He confirmed that the facility had private security guards at the time, but it was not clear how the individual interacted with the suspect.
Stainbrook read a statement from the Avant family.
“I would like to thank the entire Avant family for their love, support and condolences for Jacqueline Avant. Jacqueline is a wonderful woman, wife, mother and philanthropist who has lived in Beverly Hills for 55 years. She was an immeasurable positive person. Contribution and influence to the arts community. She will miss her family, friends, and all the people she has had throughout her wonderful life. “
The video from AIR7 HD showed a sliding glass door shattered in Avant’s house. Residents nearby expressed sadness and anxiety after hearing the deadly invasion.
“It’s devastating. There’s something else every night. Someone needs to step up,” said neighbor Rebecca Cohen. “This is just terrible, it’s breaking our hearts. They’re a great family.”
