Hartman leads No. 20 Wake Forest to 38-10 Romp in the Gator Bowl

Jacksonville, Florida-Sam Hartman throws three touchdown passes, two of which are tight-end Brandon Chapman, No. 20 Wake Forest defeated Rutgers 38-10 at the Gator Bowl on Friday to achieve 11 wins for the second time in program history. ..

Hartman completed 23 out of 39 passes at 304 yards. He added another 21 yards of rush, pushing the total touchdowns this season to 50. 39 passes and 11 rushes.

Demon Deacons (11-3) controlled the game from the beginning, scoring on the first three drives and opening a double-digit lead just before half-time. Given that Rutgers (5-8) was a late replacement for Texas A & M in 23rd place, it worked as expected.

Aggie has withdrawn due to a shortage of available players due to injuries, opt-outs, transfers and COVID-19 issues. The NCAA gave Rutgers the first shot to fill the void because it had the highest academic progress rate score of all five to seven teams of interest.

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano rushed from the Christmas holidays to gather players and practice two in a hot bubble before heading south. They entered the nearby Pontevedra beach two more this week before leaving the field.

Nevertheless, they seemed far from ready to face one of the country’s greatest crimes.

Wake Forest scored the highest average of 41.9 points in the program. It was second at the Atlantic Coast Conference and fifth across the country.

Demon Deacon finished at 450 yards. They converted 8 out of 14 third downs and tried the 4th down only once.

The turning point came in the second quarter when cornerback Gavin Holmes stepped in front of the pass to Noah Vedral’s Joshua Young Blood at the goal line and intercepted it. Wake then led 17-10 and eventually drove for a 10-point lead in the field goal and break.

Vedral was one of the five players who threw a pass at Rutgers. He completed 8 out of 13 passes with 87 yards and a pass cut.

AT Perry scored 10 passes at 127 yards and a score at Wake Forest.

Take away

Wake Forest: Demon Deacons concludes their best season of 15 years with a win and is ready to become one of their pre-season favorites at the Atlantic Coast Conference next season. They could lose 6 out of 22 starters and expect All-ACC kicker Nick Shiva to return.

Rutgers: Scarlet Knights flipped the ball twice. This was twice as much for an aggressive challenge team with little room for error. Rutgers was 5-0 this season when he didn’t turn the ball over. Schiano’s team fell to 0-8 when they committed sales in 2021.

Discharge again

Wake Forest linebacker Ryan Smenda, a junior who grew up in nearby Orange Park, was sent off as his third target this season. This time, Smenda barely contacted. He was deliberately punished for leading with a helmet while chasing Rutgers quarterback Gavin Wimsat. Wimsat slipped late and Smenda flew over him.

Smenda was also sent off in a regular season match between the Army (October 23) and North Carolina (November 13). He had to sit in the first half of the next match as all three exits took place in the second half. He will have to sit against the Virginia Military Institute on September 1st in the first half of Wake’s 2022 season opener.

Major injuries

Wake Forest Panther Ivan Mora aircasted his right ankle / foot in the fourth quarter and was added to the cart from the field. After the kick-off, Mora got caught in the bottom of the pile-up.

next

Wake Forest expects Hartman to return to its fifth year. He started 33 games over four seasons and recorded 87 touchdowns, including 71 passes.

Rutgers says goodbye to nine sixth grade seniors, including seven defenders. The most notable starting points are the cornerback Tre Avery and the defensive tackle Julius Turner.
