Chicago (CBS) — Illinois has set a new record for COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations as new infectious diseases continue to proliferate across the state.
On Thursday, the Illinois Public Health Service reported 44,089 newly identified cases of COVID-19. This is the most reported of the day. Previous records were 32,279 new cases reported Wednesday. It is the fourth time in the last eight days that Illinois has set a new record for daily COVID-19 infections.

Illinois has seen an average of 27,141 new cases per day in the past week, an increase of 280% in the past month.
The state also set a new record for COVID-19 hospitalization, with 7,098 people being treated with COVID-19 at a hospital in Illinois as of Wednesday night. This is the first time Illinois has exceeded 7,000 hospitalizations, and the state has set new hospitalization records for four consecutive days.
Illinois also reported 104 new deaths today. This is the first time the state has killed more than 100 people a day in nearly 11 months. Illinois currently has an average of 63 deaths per day in the past week, an increase of 91% in the past month.
The state-wide average case positive rate is up to 14.7%, higher than at any point during the fall 2020 surge when this rate reached 13.7%. The state’s infection rate peaked at 24.2% during the early days of the pandemic on April 6, 2020.
