Has been updated:Boston (AP) — The team said Sam Jones, a seasoned scorer with 10 NBA titles behind Boston Celtics teammate Bill Russell, has died in the Basketball Hall of Fame. He was 88 years old.
According to Celtics spokesman Jeff Twis, Jones was hospitalized in Florida on Thursday night for health problems. The team planned a moment of silence before the match against the Phoenix Suns on Friday.
“I lost another of my dear friends,” Celtics broadcaster Cedric Maxwell wrote on Twitter. “Well, the bank is open to heaven with this #NYE.”
From North Carolina, Jones had never seen his play in the 1957 draft by Celtics general manager Red Auerbach after playing for Hall of Fame coach John McLendon at North Carolina Central. Nevertheless, he was selected as the 8th place overall.
He averaged 17.7 points, recorded a little less than five rebounds in 12 years, and achieved eight consecutive victories between 1959 and 1966.
Celtics coach Ime Udoka said before the match on Friday, “The championship and what he did is clearly a huge loss to the community here.”
