Edmonton captain Connor McDavid, forward Derek Ryan and defensive Tyson Barrie were added to the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol list prior to the Oilers match in Toronto.
McDavid and Ryan were removed from practice after returning a positive test on Tuesday. The team was waiting for the results of further tests to determine the status of the match against the Maple Leafs on Wednesday.
Edmonton lost 4-1 to the Rangers in New York after McDavid did a negative test on Monday.
The Oilers also put Ryan Newgent Hopkins on the injured list. Newgent Hopkins has been injured every day since Saturday.
The Oilers also announced that Forward Zack Kassian has cleared the COVID-19 protocol and goalkeeper Ilya Konovalov has been lent to the team’s taxi team.
Goalkeeper Mike Smith is set to return from a private injury to get started.
The Maple Leafs Center’s Toronto Matthews told reporters that he plans to play in the match on Wednesday after attending the practice. Matthews was locked out of Toronto’s two previous practices for prophylactic reasons after being positive for COVID-19 on Monday’s rapid antigen test and negative on Tuesday’s PCR test.
