Rockford, Illinois (AP) —Rockford city officials have agreed to pay $ 50,000 to settle a lawsuit in a man who accused city police officers of excessive force during a 2017 robbery arrest.
A federal lawsuit in Antonio Lamont Williams alleges that a Rockford police officer beat him outside his mother’s house after a nearby tavern was robbed. Rockford Register Star report.
Williams, 48, said after police threw him to the ground in July 2017 and he tried to leave the area to prevent police from finding the drug-related equipment he had with him. Said he started beating him.
Police said Williams was resisting the arrest, but he claimed to “protect and protect” his face and head from punches.
Officers said in court filings that both he and Williams slipped to the ground, Williams ignored his orders and resisted handcuffs. Police officers hit Williams five times before using the stun gun, saying that he had hit but had no effect, and after three more hits, he successfully suppressed and arrested Williams.
Williams was convicted of robbery, but police officers were withdrawn from allegations of worsening batteries and resistance to arrest. He has been sentenced to six years in an unrelated case.
