Brunel denied cheating and said he was ready to talk to the investigator through a lawyer. Brunel’s legal team repeatedly complained about the situation in his detention and tried to release him awaiting trial.
Brunel, in his 70s, was detained at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris in 2020 as part of an extensive French investigation unleashed on charges of US sex trafficking against Epstein.
Epstein’s frequent companion, Brunel, was considered central to the French investigation into alleged sexual exploitation of women and girls by US financiers and his circle. Epstein frequently traveled to France and had an apartment in Paris.
Since the French investigation began in 2019, several women who have identified themselves as victims have spoken to police and have complained about the slow pace of the investigation.
One of them, Thysia Huisman, said the news of Brunel’s death put her in “shock.”
“I’ve been fighting for years and that makes me angry,” Huisman, a former Dutch model who told police he was raped by Brunel when he was a teenager, told The Associated Press. “For me, the end of this was to be in court, and now its whole ending-which will help form the closure-is robbed of me.
Anne-Claire Lejeune, a lawyer representing Huisman and the other victims, said the other women involved in the case felt the same.
“Great disappointment, great frustration that (victims) can’t get justice,” she told AP.
She suspected that the investigation would lead to a trial because Brunel was at the center of the case. She also expressed concern that Brunel’s death meant that his whistleblowers would not have official recognition of their status as victims.
“Rebuilding ourselves (after abuse) is one of the important steps,” Huisman said.
She expressed hope that Brunel’s death would not discourage women from continuing to talk about abuse. “Women are now able to talk about it,” she said, in addition to the growing view of sexual misconduct in France. “It’s a difficult step that requires a lot of courage and power.”
Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein’s main accusers, said Brunel raised women (some underage) for sex with Epstein and others, and promised to do modeling work. Claims to have been tempted.
