Currently, many
states have permitted recreational and medicinal use of marijuana. But with the
increasing use, experts are warning heart patients regarding marijuana use.
Reportedly, over two million people across America have used or are using
marijuana. According to new research, published in the journal of the American
College of Cardiology, the usage may impose a severe risk of heavy bleeding as
well as other problems. On one side, medical marijuana, permitted in 33 states,
is assisting to ease American’s pain. While on the other hand, it seems to put
people’s lives in danger. The research highlights that marijuana can react with
common heart drugs, even with blood thinners and statins. Researchers say the
interaction may eventually lead to increased health risks.
Dr. Muthiah
Vaduganathan, a heart specialist at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston,
has conducted the study. According to the author, using marijuana
simultaneously with heart medicines can affect the function of the drugs. He
added it is possible because the breakdown process involves the same liver
enzymes. As a result, the enzymes process both blood thinners or statins and
compounds in marijuana. Thus, researchers note using heart medications, and
marijuana concurrently can transform the efficiency or the effectiveness of the
medicines. Researchers have even illustrated the case by offering an example.
According to the study, marijuana consumption can raise the levels of warfarin.
It is a blood thinner in the body, whose excessive levels can result in
excessive bleeding.
Vaduganathan
recommends that it is better to have a frank discussion with physicians as it
does affect some parts of their treatment. He added some heart patients should
inhibit pot completely. Above all, the study suggests cardiologists should
examine their patients for marijuana use while asking them about drug
consumption. Meanwhile, people not taking medications should also focus on the
impact of marijuana on their heart and overall health. Well, the effect of pot
on heart health relies on the way of its ingestion. Smoking has a massive
negative impact. Even more, it bears risks alike tobacco smoking, while eatable
marijuana products impose the minimum risk.
