A student who was struck by an adult at the board of education while talking about his grandmother who died of COVID

Rutherford County, Tennessee (WKRN) — The retired president of the Tennessee Board of Education apologized after being struck by a student talking about his deceased grandmother at a board meeting earlier this week.

The now viral video shows Grady Knox, a student at Central Magnet School, speaking in favor of Maskman Date at the school board on Tuesday night. He talked about his grandmother, he said he died as a result of the virus.

“Last year, my grandmother, a former teacher of the Rutherford County School System, died of COVID because someone wasn’t wearing a mask,” Grady told the board before being interrupted.

The people behind Grady began to laugh and shake their heads, holding a sign saying “Let’s make the kids smile.” At some point, I hear someone in the background yelling “Shut up!”.

After looking around, Grady continued. “By not wearing a mask at school, it is irresponsible.”

Since then, media outlets across the country have broadcast this clip and shared it across Facebook, Twitter, and TikTok.

At a meeting Thursday night, Coy Young, the retired chairman of the Rutherford County Board of Education, dealt with the case.

“Remember that the other day a young man who was a student at Central Magnet was here and talked to him. His name is Gradinox. He tells us about his grandmother he lost. If you haven’t heard of it yet, what happened to the young man at this conference was pretty devastating. It was everywhere in the news, and I’m a young man he I really regret that he was treated as it was. We have an obligation to apologize to him, “Young said.

The Rutherford County Board of Education passed a temporary Maskman date at the board meeting Thursday night. Mandates are effective on Mondays and are valid until October 14th.

Families can opt out of their children from requirements under Governor Bill Lee’s Executive Order.
