Lanphier HS Cancels Two Soccer Games Due to COVID-19 Case | Top Story

Springfield, Illinois (Wand)-Ranfia High School has canceled the September 10 football game and the following week’s game due to the program’s COVID-19 incident.

According to a statement in District 186, five students at the school tested positive on the SHIELD surveillance test. Four of those cases were on the soccer team.

According to the school, the protocol required canceling the regular match against U-High on September 10th and the match against Jacksonville the following week. Authorities said they had made a decision in collaboration with the Sangamon County Public Health Service.

All five students were asymptomatic when tested.

“Individuals vaccinated by an asymptomatic soccer team will be able to continue attending school,” the district said. “Ranfie’s football coach decides how to proceed with the practice based on the number of unaffected athletes.”

Lanphier was the third high school in the district to take the SHIELD test in the week of September 6th. There were no cases in Springfield or Southeast detected by the SHIELD surveillance test.

Authorities said unvaccinated athletes are participating in the SHIELD test to actively detect asymptomatic and presymptomatic cases of COVID-19.
