Springfield, Illinois – The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that certified child seat safety engineers are offering free child seat safety checks throughout the state as part of this week’s Child Seat Safety Week.

“National Seat Check Saturday is an opportunity to ensure that your child is safe with the correct child or booster seat,” said Cynthia Watters, director of safety programs and engineering at IDOT. “When it comes to child safety, parents don’t want to be wrong. Take advantage of events in your area to ensure that your child is safe and sits in the right seat at every stage of life. please confirm.”

At Saturday’s seat check, a technician will explain how to properly install and use a child seat and determine if your child is sitting in a seat that is suitable for their age, height and weight. In Illinois and the United States, an estimated four of the five child seats are not properly installed, causing road accidents as the leading cause of child death. According to the latest National Road Safety Agency survey, more than one-third of children under the age of 12 who died in a collision were not properly detained.

State law requires children to ride in child seats up to the age of eight and to be backwards up to the age of two.
