Piscataway, NJ (AP) — Two Rutgers players have been suspended from the football team after being charged with three people being attacked by paintball fired from a passing vehicle.
Greg Schiano took action on Tuesday shortly after defensive back Malaki “Max” Melton and Chris Long were charged with three assaults and weapons counts, respectively. The accusation stems from a Monday night incident in the area of the school’s Livingston campus in Piscataway. It is unknown if either player has a lawyer.
Melton recorded two intercepts, including one returned for a 46-yard touchdown to the Temple, and blocked punts in three games this season. Long played in a special team in all three games this season and played in two games last season.
The Scarlet Knights will play Big Ten on Saturday, challenging 19 Michigan in Ann Arbor.
The shooting occurred around 10 pm on Monday, according to university police. The three students who hit the paintball were slightly injured, but refused to be treated on-site.
Subsequent investigations arrested 19-year-old athletes early Tuesday and released them on their own initiative. They will appear in the first court on November 4th.
