Washington (AP) —Thursday federal health officials postponed high-stakes decisions on whether to keep the best-selling vaping brand Juul on the market and ordered thousands of other e-cigarettes over-the-counter.

The Food and Drug Administration said it refused to apply for nearly 950,000 flavored e-cigarettes and related products, primarily because it could appeal to minor teens. Some products are currently on sale, but many others are only proposed by the manufacturer. However, the agency did not control Juul, the most popular brand among adult smokers and many teens.

Parents, politicians, and anti-cigarette advocates have pressured the FDA for years to ban Juul’s high-nicotine device, which many have blamed for the recent surge in e-cigarettes for minors. I did. But the agency said it needed more time to control the company’s products.

“There is more work to be done to complete the rest of the review and ensure that we continue to take appropriate action to protect our youth from the dangers of all tobacco products, including e-cigarettes,” the authorities said. Said in a statement. The agency said that 80% of vape teens and children use flavored products.

Thursday’s actions are part of a radical review by the FDA to bring scientific scrutiny to the multi-billion dollar e-cigarette industry after years of regulatory lag. The agency has not yet approved the vaping product as a less harmful option for smokers.

The FDA faced a court deadline on Thursday and made a decision on marketing applications from Juul and hundreds of other companies. The date was set by a federal judge after the anti-tobacco group successfully sued the FDA to speed up its review.

To stay on the market, businesses must show that their e-cigarettes benefit public health. In fact, that means that adult smokers who use the product may quit or reduce smoking, and teens are less likely to get hooked on them.

FDA regulators have previously stated that they prioritize evaluating the products of Juul and a few other major companies before considering the largest vapor-breathing devices with refillable tanks and other products. I did. These products are mainly popular with adults and are sold in specialized arc shops.
