Berlin (AP) -The German government announced on Monday that it would support plans for a North Sea spaceport used to launch small satellites from Europe into space.
Economic Minister Peter Altmaier said the government would act as an “anchor customer” for the water launch site off the German coast.
“We want to strengthen our national space program,” he said, a cooperation agreement between the German Offshore Spaceport Alliance and four European rocket manufacturers (two from Germany, one from the Netherlands and one from the United Kingdom). Said at an event commemorating the signing of.
Siegfried Russwu, head of the Federation of German Industries BDI, said the North Sea spaceport would make it easier to launch satellites into polar and sun-synchronous orbits.
Although there are already more than 20 spaceports around the world, European space companies now rely primarily on launches from the Russian site in Kazakhstan, French Guiana in South America, and the United States.
