The military procession marked the beginning of a memorial service for Marine Corps Cpl. Humberto Sanchez of Logan’s Port, 22 years old.
Sanchez’s body arrived Sunday morning at Grissom Air Force Base near Peru, about 80 miles (128 km) north of Indianapolis. The procession then headed for Logan’s Port, about 20 miles (30 km).
People lined up on the route to pay homage, many with the American flag, and jets flew overhead as the procession approached downtown Logan’s Port. It paused downtown, and a hearse carrying Sanchez’s body paused under the garrison flag. The procession included a vehicle carrying the Indianapolis Police Department and Sanchez’s family, followed by thousands of motorcycles.

Sanchez was one of 17 members of the Logan’s Port High School class who joined the army after graduating in 2017. According to his obituary, he died in an August 26 attack in Kabul, where he was transferred after serving as a security guard at the US Embassy in Jordan.
A general visit is scheduled for Monday at Lifegate Church in Logan’s Port. The funeral will take place on Tuesday at 11:00 am in the church. The burial continues at Mount Hope Cemetery.
