Hundreds of people pay tribute to Greek composer Theodorakis | World News

Athens, Greece (AP) —Hundreds of people gathered at Athens Cathedral on Monday to pay the final tribute to Greek composer and politician Mikis Theodorakis.

Theodorakis, who died Thursday at the age of 96, is enshrined in the cathedral’s chapel for three days before being buried on an island in southern Crete. His body arrived on Monday, nearly two hours late, in a controversy over the details of the burial.

His family reportedly objected to his burial on Crete over the weekend, according to his last wishes. The court temporarily suspended the burial program while waiting for the dispute to be resolved.

Theodorakis’ daughter had previously said she would be buried near Corinth in the village of Vlahati, where she maintained her villa. However, a 2013 letter from Theodorakis to the mayor of the town of Chania on Crete was published, stating that the composer wanted to be buried in a nearby Galatas cemetery, despite family disagreements.

Theodorakis was well known in Greece for his political activities as well as his musical career. He has written a wide range of works, from dark symphonies to popular television and film scores, such as “Serpico” and “Greek Zorba”.

He is also remembered for his opposition to the military junta that ruled Greece between 1967 and 1974. Meanwhile, he was persecuted, imprisoned, and music was outlawed.

The Greek Communist Party said on the weekend that Theodorakis’s body would be open to the public from Monday, followed by a “farewell ceremony” on Wednesday, after which the late composer would fly to Crete. Church services and burials take place on Thursdays.

Theodorakis had a turbulent relationship with the Communist Party known as the Greek Communist Party KKE, leaving in the late 1960s, rejoining in the late 1970s, and being elected to the conservative New Democracy in 1990. ..

However, he wrote to Communist Party General Secretary Dimitris Kotunbas in October, essentially leaving him to arrange the funeral.

“Now, at the end of my life, when I buy a stake, the details are erased from my heart and the” big thing “remains. So I can see that I had the most important, powerful and mature year under the banner of KKE. For this reason, I want to leave this world as a communist, “writes Theodorakis.
