Tunisia has recorded the first case of the Omicron mutant

Tunisia, Tunisia-Tunisia recorded the first case of the Omicron variant on Sunday after health authorities in the North African country tested positive for men traveling from Turkey.

Dr. Hachemi Louzer, a member of the Tunisia COVID-19 Task Force, said the man was from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. After arriving from Istanbul, he tested positive at Tunis International Airport on Friday and screened samples at the Pasteur Public Health Institute in the capital, Tunis, where a variant of Omicron was identified, Luther said.

He said some of his fellow travelers, including his brother who tested negative for COVID-19, were quarantined.

Health officials have restricted travel to Tunisia after the spread of the Omicron variant in Africa and Europe last week.

Health experts said the overall epidemiological situation in Tunisia has improved in the last two months after the country received vaccine shipments from several countries, including the United States.

More than 25,000 people have died from the coronavirus in Tunisia.
