New York (AP) — R. Kelly is unlikely to take the position of a witness in a sexual trafficking trial, an R & B singer lawyer told the judge on Tuesday.
The jury’s statement by lawyer Deveraux Cannick, who left the courtroom, was made when the defense closed the case in a federal court in New York City.
The potential sight that Kelly testifies has always been a long shot. Judge Anne Donnelly of the US District Court said Tuesday that the defendant had time to change his mind and urged him to nod before closing the argument.
Closing arguments for the prosecution could begin as early as Wednesday afternoon.
Kelly, 54, was a sexual predator who cared for and exploited young victims behind the scenes of a 30-year career highlighted in the 1996 mega-hit “I Believe I Can Fly.” I have repeatedly denied the accusations that I was.
