NLRB Lawyer: College Football Players Are Employees | Nationwide

The Supreme Lawyer of the Labor Relations Committee wrote in a note on Wednesday that college football players and other income-generating sports players are school employees, and private college players form unions or otherwise work. He said he would be able to negotiate terms.

Jennifer Abruzzo, NLRB’s legal counsel, also threatened actions against schools, conferences and the NCAA. If they continue to use the term “student athlete,” they say it was created to obscure employment relationships with college athletes and discourage them from pursuing their rights.

“The freedom to engage in a wide range of lucrative companies makes academic institution players very similar to professional athletes hired by teams to play sports, while at the same time leveraging their fame to increase their income. We pursue business ventures, “said Memo.

Neither the NCAA nor the representatives of the five largest athletic conferences immediately responded to requests for comment from the Associated Press.

Abruzzo’s memo states that there have been many changes since then. Includes this year’s unanimous Supreme Court ruling, which lifted certain restrictions on compensation for college athletes.

Abruzzo also noted that players across the country were engaged in collective action after the killing of George Floyd. This is a “cooperative activity that is directly related to employment conditions and is protected”.
