Newport News, Virginia (AP) — Police said two students were injured in a high school shooting in Virginia on Monday afternoon.
Newport News police chief Steve Drew said at a news conference that a 17-year-old boy was shot in the face at Heritage High School and a 17-year-old girl was shot in the foot. Both were taken to the hospital and neither injury was considered life-threatening, he said.
Police said in a statement that a male boy was detained in the case. Authorities believe the suspect and victim knew each other, but did not provide details, the chief said.
According to Drew, the building was evacuated and FBI agents and state soldiers were looking for someone left in the school.
George Parker, director of Newport News Public School, said the high school was randomly searching for guns. Classes resumed on September 8th, so students were in the second week of the school year.
“Neither the supervisor, the teacher, nor the principal would want to experience this situation,” Parker said. “We just look at the faces of our students, how afraid they were under these circumstances, and the traumatic staff … No one wants to get over these situations.”
In a video of the scene, a tactical unit arrived at the scene, parents on the sidewalk talked on their cell phones, and a tape of the crime scene spread to a part of the school parking lot.
Two others were taken to the hospital after the shooting, Drew said. One was injured in his arm as he escaped from school and the other was injured in asthma.
Police said reports of active shooters at other schools were false.
