Has been updated:Burlington, NC (AP) — JR Smith set foot in a wasp’s nest at his first college golf tournament, which had nothing to do with his high score.
The 36-year-old two-time NBA champion was literally stabbed by a wasp while completing a round Tuesday at North Carolina A & T on the second day of Elon’s Phoenix Invitational.
“You’ll never be stabbed in a basketball court or arena,” said Smith, who is now a freshman walk-on. “This is one of the few things you don’t have to worry about (in basketball). It’s another animal. When I was stabbed, I was like” no way. ” “
The Hornets are a layout designed by Donald Ross and have been added to Smith’s birdieless round 8 over par 79 puncture wounds. Combined with two rounds on Monday, he finished with more than 240 29s and was ranked 81st out of 84 entries.
Smith said he was determined to improve because he knew that others were paying attention. After two rounds on Monday, he contacted Phoenix guard Chris Paul and spoke with a former NBA teammate as part of the group text.
“I got a lot of great feedback,” Smith said. “Chris Paul told me that everyone was talking about it in the locker room. Everyone was really looking for my score, so I had to take care of the business. When I see them, I don’t get much repulsion. “
Still, he influenced the event. Well after the round, Presbyterian performance partner Mason Watley went to take a picture with Smith.
“He made golf cool for people,” Watley said.
Being an ambassador to the game was not Smith’s top priority when the Hornets attacked.
It happened in his third hole in the third round at the Allamance Country Club. His tee shot was off the fairway and embedded in pine straw. He found the ball, but the wheels of his pull cart rolled over the nest.
Smith shook his arm and jumped out of the area before he needed treatment. Smith was given a 15-minute break when other groups played, along with George Washington and Watley’s play partner Florian Bratty.
“I tried to turn that into a positive,” Smith said, referring to wearing a suit during the illness in the NBA. “This may be the equivalent of a flu game.”
Smith had the sixth best score of the six players on his team. Aggies finished 11th on the field of 13 teams, 57 shots off the pace set by tournament champion Elon.
Smith played for the NBA for 16 years, winning the Cleveland Championship in 2016 and the Los Angeles Lakers Championship last year in the Florida Pandemic Bubble. The Lakers title was won just a year before his debut as an Aggie golfer.
Smith said he would set up a tentative round next week with recently retired North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams. Smith was originally set up to play basketball at Williams’ Turheels before jumping directly to the NBA in 2004.
