Sports betting begins in Arizona in time for the NFL season | National News

Phoenix (AP) — The first sports betting business in Arizona officially opens on Thursday in time for the start of the NFL season, with live betting at college and professional sports online and Phoenix retailers. I was gambling.

In the morning, I bet directly on the Fan Duel Sportsbook at Phoenix’s downtown arena, played by Phoenix Suns, and on a temporary betting window just below Chase Field in Arizona Diamondbacks, run by Caesars Entertainment. Some companies have also begun to accept online betting.

“I was in Las Vegas to do this,” said Emil Stephan, 59, excited after betting on the Caesars window. “This saves a lot of money, time, and fuel to do it here.”

The betting window was enacted by Congress and made possible by a new law signed by Republican Governor Doug Ducey last spring. Non-traditional contests, such as those run by Bingo for charity, were banned outside Native American tribe-run casinos before the law was passed.

Arizona participates in more than half of the state Only three years after it was approved by the United States Supreme Court in allowing bets on sports. The state wants to withdraw tens of millions of dollars a year from legalized gambling.

It could also be profitable for teams and gambling companies, some of which were actively promoted on television and social media before Thursday’s launch.

The Governor’s Office has negotiated a new agreement with the tribe to allow betting on live and fantasy sports.

In exchange, the tribe was allowed to expand its offering of table games and slot machines and run its own sports books at the casino.

Ten tribes have also obtained licenses to do sports betting online. Online fantasy sports betting was legalized at the end of last month. Prior to that, Arizona was one of the few states that was still banned.

However, according to the state gambling bureau, the team of experts was the first to open sports books in the actual retail location, as the necessary addendum for tribal gambling compacts has not been completed.

Ian Johnson of Phoenix said he likes to bet directly because online betting is available but he can collect cash immediately if he wins.

“I don’t think I’m going to Las Vegas anymore,” said Johnson, 38, who works for software sales.

The Caesers Sportsbook was opened in a temporary space using Chase Field’s five Diamondbacks ticket windows. Team officials said it was the first major league baseball stadium where fans could bet directly. Diamondbacks plans to open a more permanent space early next year.

The Footprint Center, home of the Suns, Phoenix Mercury and Arizona Rattlers football teams, hosts the FanDuel Sportsbook. A ceremony attended by Ducey and retired Sands Channing Frye, Richard Jefferson, and Van Duel executives will take place Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the NFL season featuring the Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers prior to the kick-off. The official watch party was held.

State law granted licenses for up to 10 professional sports teams last month, awarding eight, and allowing them and their tribes to partner with sportsbooks. Team licenses allow retail and online betting.

In many respects, online licenses are far more valuable than being able to run a traditional “sports book” at or near a tribal casino or professional sports team stadium.

This is because online operations can be performed 24 hours a day with little overhead and are not limited to the gamblers who are actually at the venue.
