London (AP) — British writer Susanna Clarke won the prestigious Women’s Prize for Fiction on Wednesday for her mind-tuning fantasy novel Piranage.
Clark won the £ 30,000 ($ 41,000) award for his second novel, published 16 years after the first “Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell” became a global bestseller.
Set in a magical alternative reality, “Piranage” is told by a man who lives in a house full of maze-like statues that make up the entire universe. As he explores his territory, the character’s understanding of his world gradually changes — and so does the reader’s understanding.
Clark’s first novel, The Spectacular Magical Story, was published in 2004 and was acclaimed, sold over 4 million copies, and was adopted by the BBC on television. Clark states that his illness slowed down his follow-up work because he was suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome.
“Piranage” was published in 2020 as the coronavirus pandemic caused much of the world to experience blockages, isolations, and dislocations that touched the hearts of many readers and critics.
Novelist Bernardin Evaristo, who chaired the Women’s Prize for Fiscal Awards Jury, said Clark “is beyond our imagination, telling us something deep about what being human is. I created a new world. “
Founded in 1996, Clark was one of two British writers of the award’s six finalists who opened the door to female English writers around the world. Previous winners include Zadie Smith, Tayari Jones and Maggie O’Farrell.
Other finalists this year include American writer Brit Bennett’s “The Vanishing Half”, American writer Patricia Rockwood’s “Nobody Talks About This”, “Transcendental Kingdom”, and Ghanaian America. “How the One-Armed sisters clean her house,” said the writer Yaa Jashi and the Barbadian writer Sherry Jones, “Unresolved Ground” by British writer Claire Fuller.
