On Sunday in Courtland Sutton, Jacksonville, Florida, Denver Broncos defeated the disastrous Jacksonville 23-13, causing Jaguar to lose 17 times in a row.
Sutton finished nine catches at 159 yards, including a shoestring grab in the third quarter. This is definitely appreciated in his best play in four seasons. In Denver’s first game without Jerry Jeudy (ankle), Sutton showed that he could be the go-to man for Teddy Bridgewater.
Broncos, the seventh in the last nine years and the first 2-0 since 2019, has been waiting for this kind of performance in Sutton for years. In the second round of 2018, he missed 15 games last season due to a torn knee ligament. It was just the third 100-yard receiving game of his career.
He seemed unstoppable against Jaguar (0-2), who had a hard time keeping pace with him on the field.
Sutton passed almost half of the 328 yards of Bridgewater. Bridgewater completed 26 of the 34 passes, and TD tossed Tim Patrick and Noah Fant for the second straight week of error-free football.
Many other things are going well with Broncos.
The first draft topic, Patrick Sirtain II, started his first career on behalf of Ronald Darby (hamstring) in the cornerback and recorded his first career interception. The rookie grabbed a big grab near the sideline in front of Tyrone Johnson.
Sirtain’s pick was Trevor Lawrence, the second of the day, the fifth of the season, and the overall number one.
Lawrence limited an 83-yard drive to open the game with a 25-yard pass to Marvin Jones. But Jacksonville did little right for the rest of the afternoon.
Jamal Agnew returned the kick-off 102 yards later in the match, but was quickly flagged as the match was delayed to ensure the kick-off.
The Jacksonville home opener wasn’t as bad as the season opener a week ago, but it wasn’t.
Short-lived reunion
Bradley Chubb’s return from an ankle injury was short-lived. Denver’s prominent linebacker left the game in the second quarter after exacerbating the injury again. Chub appeared to be significantly upset as he walked away from the field into the injured tent and locker room.
He was excluded after a while.
One of the NFL’s most dominant pass rush duos, Chub and star Von Miller, came together on the field for the first time in almost two years. They finally did it to Jaguar on September 29, 2019. Chub missed the rest of the season due to a left knee injury, and Miller actually swept everything in 2020 after untendoning his left ankle.
Chub wasn’t active in the opening round at the New York Giants last week, but tried to go despite limited practice throughout the week.
Lamborghini
Josh Lambo’s struggle continued on Sunday, raising questions about whether Jaguar would act as a kicker. Rambo missed two field goal attempts and was 3-0 in the season.
Rambo, who underwent hip surgery last year but vowed to be “a better kicker than ever” earlier this month, grew from 52 yards to the right and 48 yards to the left. Became a 55-yard player in Houston last week.
Major injuries
Broncos LB Josie Jewel left the match with a shoulder injury in the first half. Jaguar lost TE James O’Shaughness (ankle), CB CJ Henderson (hip), and RG AJ Can (hamstring).
Light crowd
Jaguar announced 58,461 tickets distributed for home openers, many of whom went to Denver fans. Orange jerseys were widespread throughout the stadium.
