Chicago (CBS) — In Illinois, new COVID-19 cases have continued to decline in recent weeks as state-wide infection rates have fallen to their lowest level since mid-July.

Last week, the Illinois Public Health Service released 21,787 new confirmed cases of coronavirus, including 239 additional deaths.

Illinois has seen a weekly decline in weekly cases for the third straight week, with an average of 3,112 new cases per day in the state over the past seven days, down 28% from three weeks ago.

The average state infection rate has fallen for four consecutive weeks, and the state-wide average case positive rate has dropped to 2.7%. During this latest surge, infection rates peaked at 5.3% five weeks ago. The rate is currently the lowest reported by the state since July 16th.

The death toll has also dropped slightly since last week. Illinois killed an average of 34 people a day this week, down 17% from last week.

During that time, state vaccination rates have declined slightly over the past two weeks, with an average of 19,371 vaccinations per day over the past week, down 5% from two weeks ago.
